Washington Post Highlights B-Line Medical & President Hartley Thompson

hartley-thompson-b-line-medical

A fantastic behind-the-scenes look at the leadership behind B-Line Medical, one of the world’s most innovative groups behind medical simulation recording technologies, by Thomas Heath of The Washington Post. This insider look reveals the challenges and successes that have defined the company, from startup to now over 70 employees worldwide.

Having met many of the team from B-Line Medical I can attest that they are innovative people dedicated to improving learning outcomes at simulation centers around the world. HealthySimulation.com had the opportunity to interview B-Line Medical Co-Founder Chafic Kazoun about the latest innovations unveiled at IMSH 2016 — and as I am every year — I left impressed! Stay tuned for more but in the mean time check out this great article:

“Thompson grew up in the Bahamas, in Freeport. His easygoing nature belies his ambition. His parents pushed him early on to learn the importance of money and entrepreneurship. His father has started various businesses. His mother owns an event-planning company. “My dad really pushed me and my brothers to go out and make your own money,” he said. “At 8 years old, we started a window-washing and car-washing business.”

“I fell in love with just providing a service to somebody and a product and actually getting paid for it,” he said. He attended Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., on scholarship, graduating with a degree in management information systems.

Thompson joined B-Line Medical in 2007 as employee No. 12. The company was 18 months old. He found the job on CareerBuilder.com. “We were not making money when I got here,” he said. “Like any start-up, we were having lean days. Some bills didn’t get paid.”

Thompson’s plan was to get experience, then start his own company in a few years. But he loved B-Line. “I just showed a passion for the business and a hunger to take on more responsibility and keep learning,” said Thompson, who has a master’s degree in information management from the University of Maryland. B-Line’s breakthrough came when its technology was purchased by Washington University in St. Louis and by Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

“When we landed those two, things started snowballing,” Thompson said.”

Implementing Curriculum Using Simulation To Augment Pediatric Emergency Medicine Rotation

ped simulation research curriculum

Shared by our friends at B-Line Medical this Med Ed Online article “Development and assessment of a pediatric emergency medicine simulation and skills rotation: meeting the demands of a large pediatric clerkship” by Elaine K. Fielder and colleagues can help us expand simulation into our programs.

Objective: To implement a curriculum using simulation and skills training to augment a Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) rotation within a pediatric clerkship.

Background: PEM faculty are often challenged with a high learner to teacher ratio in a chaotic clinical setting. This challenge was heightened when our pediatric clerkship’s traditional 1-week PEM rotation (consisting of 4 students completing four 8-hour ED shifts/week) expanded to 8 students every 2 weeks. We sought to meet this challenge by integrating simulation-based education into the rotation.

Methods: Clerkship students from March to June 2012 completed our traditional rotation. Students between July and October 2012 completed the new PEM-SIM curriculum with 19 hours ED shifts/week and 16 hours/week of simulation/skills training. Pre/post-tests evaluated 1) medical management/procedural comfort (five-point Likert scale); and 2) PEM knowledge (15 multiple-choice questions).

Results: One hundred and nine students completed the study (48 traditional, 61 PEM-SIM). Improvement in comfort was significantly higher for the PEM-SIM group than the traditional group for 6 of 8 (75%) medical management items (p<0.05) and 3 of 7 (43%) procedures, including fracture splinting, lumbar puncture, and abscess incision/drainage (p<0.05). PEM-SIM students had significantly more improvement in mean knowledge compared to the traditional group (p<0.001).

Conclusions: We have successfully integrated 16 hours/week of faculty-facilitated simulation-based education into a PEM rotation within our clerkship. This curriculum is beneficial in clinical settings with high learner to teacher ratios and when patient care experiences alone are insufficient for all students to meet rotation objectives.

Exclusive First Look of SimCapture X from B-Line Medical!

From our IMSH 2015 Video Series, I connect with Chafic Kazoun, Co-Founder and CTO of B-Line Medical, who shared about their upcoming release of SimCapture X. Note: the video interview above is a early version of the new software and is not yet widely available. In this exclusive interview, HealthySimulation.com gets a sneak peek of their future SimCapture X platform — check out the video to see for yourself.

b-line medical simcapture x

Why the X? That’s easy enough, B-Line Medical celebrates their 10th anniversary this year! With so many years of medical simulation a/v recording and debriefing experience behind them, the B-Line Medical development team redesigned the SimCapture Generated User Interface (GUI) to reflect on what customers are using most. In other words, they have analyzed the use data from the past 10 years and are recreating SimCapture with an even better understanding of what we as simulation champions really want.

What I saw was a really optimized version of SimCapture, with key functionality now immediately available from the home-screen. Recent debriefings, key metrics, and relevant schedule information are all right there. Navigation is simplified with new global buttons available at any time. Exporting scenarios, including data and video, and sharing them with other SimCapture customers is also very easy to do.

Explained by B-Line Medical: “SimCapture X is the next generation SimCapture platform currently in development. The new platform will combine all of the best pieces of the industry’s most trusted video capture solution with ahead of the curve technology and the insight and feedback gleaned from our 10 years of industry experience. Notable improvements include seamless integration of Simulation and Standardized Patient programs, a fully tablet compatible interface, and a redesigned look that streamlines and simplifies center workflows.”

A very interesting note from Chafic was that SimCapture X will still offer on premises installs, but will also have the potential for cloud-based operation. Chafic predicts that eventually most simulation programs will prefer a reduction of localized hardware requirements in favor of cloud-based platforms. Can’t wait for that future to be here!

google glass b-line medical

With no headaches on the user’s side, B-Line Medical customers will be able to directly integrate Google Glass devices as a POV camera feed into their SimCapture system. Imagine putting Google glass on your primary learner, your patient manikin or confederate standardized patient. Each one of those unique angles will provide increased fidelity and debriefing opportunities for learners outside the simulation lab.

Benefits of Using Google Glass and B-Line Medical’s SimCapture:

  • High Definition: Video Engineered to provide the highest definition and lowest latency video supported by Google Glass.
  • Unique Perspective: View simulation through the eyes of learners to gain a better perspective of their experience and provide more precise guidance on their technique.
  • Portability: Recording video over Wi-Fi to any SimCapture on your center’s internal network allows you to maintain the first-person point-of-view video no matter where you are in the room.

Laerdal’s LLEAP and Vitalsbridge

vitalsbridge

Next door, Laerdal showcased their new LLEAP software, which stands for Laerdal Learning Application. To simplify simulation, the new LLEAP software unifies the control of all PC operated Laerdal simulators in one intuitive platform. This software is free in 2015 for existing Laerdal customers and looks easy to learn for those already familiar with their platform — or just beginning into simulation.

Laerdal also showed off a new hardware innovation in the form of this small black box called Vitalsbridge — which makes it possible to hook up specific models of Philips or GE Healthcare clinical patient monitors directly to your SimMan 3G or SimMan Essential! *Note that new Vitalsbridge hardware will need to be installed by a Laerdal Field Service Engineer into your SimMan product. Vitalsbridge really increases fidelity for Laerdal customers operating simulation in their professional care environments.
