As educators, utilizing technology allows us to facilitate learning and improve our student’s comprehension and performance of the content. Virtual reality (VR) is an immersive technology that allows the students to be engaged and active in learning. Individuals, no matter the type of learning style they have, can work through complex scenarios while focusing on the details to achieve the outcomes of the activity. Getting faculty and institution by in to integrate VR into the nursing curriculum can be a feat. We will discuss the successes and challenges that may be faced trying implement such an innovative technology. Also, we will identify resources that are essential for effective implementation of VR.
Chelsea Lebo is the Simulation Coordinator of the Simulation and Clinical Learning Resource Center at the College of New Jersey (TCNJ). Chelsea received her Master’s in Nursing (MSN) from Walden University with a focus on Nursing Education and is currently pursuing her PhD in Nursing at Idaho State University. Her clinical background includes medical surgical, trauma, neurology, and orthopedic nursing. She is ANCC Medical Surgical Board Certified, as well as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator. In the past, Chelsea has worked as a clinical nurse educator in the hospital setting, which included coordinating the New Graduate Nurse Residency Program, facilitating orientation, and organizing other educational programs. Currently, Chelsea teaches and facilitates simulation at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Chelsea is the Student Nurses Association advisor at TCNJ and is an active member of the American Nurses Association, Society for Simulation in Healthcare, and Sigma Theta Tau. She also is a reviewer for the Nurse Educator journal.
