Abstract:

This CE webinar is hosted by leadership of the Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare (ASPiH) Transformative Simulation Special-Interest-Group (SIG).

Transformative forms of healthcare simulation are happening globally. The potential to transform health and care is wide and varied through clinical simulation, yet our understanding is fragmented. Ultimately, this growing body of work and area of interest need an umbrella term and clear special definitions to guide and develop the field both in practice and research. Therefore, the term ‘transformative simulation’ was developed to describe clinical simulation as a tool to transform health and care through collective understanding, insight and learning, and to distinguish the practice from the more traditional educational/pedagogical approaches that are more commonly practiced, or from specific system-focussed applications only.

This CE webinar will introduce the Transformative Simulation concept taxonomy alongside the seven simulation-based I’s based on the medical simulation literature, which include:

  1. Innovation
  2. Improvement
  3. Intervention
  4. Involvement
  5. Identification
  6. Inclusion
  7. Influence

The presenters will demonstrate how the seven SBI’s can be applied, take a deep dive into what we do know and question what the simulated healthcare training community needs to do to advance the concept and understanding of methodology further. Healthcare simulation champions interested in using healthcare simulation to generate change should join this informative webinar!

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the Transformative Healthcare Simulation concept and taxonomy.
  2. Examine how the seven clinical simulation-based I’s can be applied to clinical education and training.
  3. Critique what is known and what further knowledge is required to advance knowledge and understanding of clinical simulation performance improvement outcomes.

Meet the Presenter(s):

Sharon Weldon PhD, MSc, BSc (Hons), RGN
Professor of Healthcare Simulation & Workforce Development at Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare (ASPiH)

Sharon Weldon is a Professor of Healthcare Simulation and Workforce Development. Her non-conforming application of simulation as a method has helped generate new systems of care, identified how care is perceived, and tested new interventions, all whilst engaging stakeholders not usually involved in such processes. This work aided her identification of the conceptual shift in thinking that has taken place globally, terming it Transformative Simulation. She has developed UK and USA surgical team training based on empirically evidenced communication models, and developed innovative simulated manikins and environments with artists and industry-partners. She was a key driver of Imperial College’s Centre for Engagement and Simulation Science’s pioneering research on Sequential Simulation (care pathway-based simulations) and Distributed Simulation (low cost, portable simulation equipment). Her body of work in relation to simulation challenges the wider industry fixation upon concepts such as fidelity and its relevance, questioning the established knowledge and its important in generating change and impact. She is President-Elect for the Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare (ASPiH), and an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Healthcare Simulation (IJoHS). She has received prestigious research grants, published widely, won awards and contributed to global white papers on simulation for patient safety.

Disclosures: None.
Andy Buttery BSc, MSc, DipMedEd (Dist.), RODP
Journal Liaison at Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare (ASPiH)

Andy has built a successful clinical career as an Operating Dept. Practitioner followed by nearly 20 years as Simulation & Human Factors Educator. He is currently the Regional Simulation and Human Factors Project Lead for HEE KSS in the UK and an executive committee member for ASPiH

Disclosures: None.
Colette Laws-Chapman RN, FHEA
President at Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare (ASPiH)

Colette specialized in intensive care nursing before moving into education and practice development positions. She has kept strong professional & clinical links within acute & critical care and served on the national Board of the British Association of Critical Care Nurses (BACCN) for over 20 years. Colette is the President of the Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare an interprofessional membership organization for educators working in patient safety and interactive learning methods. Colette has been involved in Simulation based education since 2009 and has a special interest in debriefing in SBE and Clinical Human Factors. She continues to develop her skills through peer coaching and reflective practice and has undertaken several training programmes to further her own skills in this modality including the CMS Instructors course (2016) CMS feedback course (2020) and the Debriefing Academy’s Master Debriefer Course (2021).
