Abstract:
Starting in 2018, IL enacted a law requiring EMS to transport police dogs injured in the line of duty to a veterinary facility if there are no persons requiring medical attention or transport at that time. A team of veterinarians, emergency medical services experts, and canine handlers developed protocols for emergency medical service personnel who may be called upon to help to initially stabilize and safely transport police canines injured in the line of duty. In this presentation, we discuss how a K9 simulation program to help prepare EMS students and providers for these events was developed and implemented by Leo Congenie, DVM in partnership with Advocate Aurora Health and the paramedic training program at Lutheran General Hospital.
Learning Objectives:
- Discuss need for EMS education training based on a new law.
- Describe the development of a K9 simulation program for EMS providers in partnership with a hospital-based simulation center.
- Share how a K9 simulation program was implemented in partnership with a hospital-based simulation center.
