Abstract:
This self-paced 4 hour Continuing Education (CE) course is designed for nursing faculty and clinical instructors. The course will provide the foundation needed to understand the basic components of clinical simulation and its importance within nursing education. Including ideas for faculty who are just starting to teach clinical. This course breaks down simulation into short modules, covering each facet of simulation, experiential and immersive learning. The information provided will expose new and experienced clinical instructors to simulation’s best practices and help them navigate through the complex myriad of concepts, equipment and technology. It will also provide guidance on how to better prepare for the traditional clinical experience by focusing on similarities between pre-conference, prebriefing, clinicals, simulation and finally post conference debriefing. In addition to this faculty will have ideas for providing experiential learning if traditional clinical is cancelled.
The course is asynchronous and includes eight 15-20 minute modules and a post module five-question knowledge check. The topics include:
- History & Terminology
- Accreditation & Standards of Best Practice
- Equipment & Technology, Technology & Realism
- Pre-conference and prebriefing
- Simulation and The Clinical Experience
- Debriefing
- Operations: Training / Program and faculty evaluation.
In addition to these eight modules, participants will have the opportunity to hear and learn from recognized simulation thought leaders around the globe, including:
- Dr. Kristyn Gadlage, Director of Accreditation at the Society for Simulation in Healthcare
- Dr. Beth Mancini, PhD, RN, NE-BC, FAHA, FAAN – Professor, Associate Dean at University of Texas at Arlington-Undergraduate Nursing Program
- Dr. Kim Leighton, PhD, RN, CHSE, CHSOS, ANEF, FSSH, FAAN – Executive Director, Itqan Clinical Simulation and Innovation Center, Hamad Medical Corporation
- Dr. Penni Watts, PhD, RN, CHSE-A – Associate Professor, UAB School of Nursing at University of Alabama at Birmingham Assistant Director, OIPC
- Lance Baily, BA, EMT-B, Founder / CEO of HealthySimulation.com
- Amy Cowperthwait, MSN – Founder & CEO, Avkin
- Dr. Paul Phrampus, MD, FSSH FACEP CPPS – Director, Winter Institute for Simulation, Education, and Research (WISER) Medical Director of Patient Safety, University of Pittsburgh / UPMC Health System

Each of these speakers provides first hand real experience in their respected areas of expertise. Two live Q&A sessions were also recorded and are apart of the online learning materials!
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will be able to articulate a basic understanding of simulation as a teaching methodology.
- Describe the pedagogy of simulation including prebriefing, facilitation, implementation and debriefing principals.
- Participants will identify nursing simulation strategies to enhance traditional clinical activities and nursing outcomes.
