Abstract:
One of the most important quotes of Sir William Osler (1849-1919), is: “History and the knowledge of men are as much part of medicine as the latest technical devices and the knowledge of science”. Although modern simulation in healthcare bloomed recently in history, its roots can be traced to the presence of mankind on earth. The credit of modern simulation should be granted to David Gaba (born in1961), the Professor of Anesthesiology who was the first to implement the simulation in aviation “Crew Resource Management” to healthcare “Crises Resource Management”. Through his early work and publications, the market for simulation has started to grow significantly worldwide. The first mannequin present in the market was a part task trainer called “Resusci Anne”. After an inspiring story happened in France, that first extensively marketed simulator was invented by the owner of one toy company “Asmund Laerdal” in collaboration with two doctors: “Peter Safar” and “Bjørn Lind” in 1960. Understanding the history of any scientific issue helps in understanding the present and planning the future, which always starts with just a dream. In this talk, the presenter will highlight the important snapshots in the history of medical simulation from the presence of mankind to the present era of artificial intelligence and high-tech world.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the importance of the past when planning for the present and the future.
- Analyse the history and progress in the field of healthcare simulation.
- Recognize the extensive work of people who participated in medical simulation development.
