Abstract:

Operations-based Mass Casualty (MASCAL) trauma simulation exercises are a common occurrence in EMS and military training. Frequently complex training operations, these MCI training exercises usually rely on role players with minimal integration of high-fidelity manikins. The reasons are many. Moulaged role players are realistic and flexible with fluid situations. Beyond that, most high-fidelity manikins are too fragile to leave the clinical training room and too complicated to operate on the fly. A drawback of role players is the challenge of performing lifesaving procedures realistically and objectively measuring care through the treatment and evacuation chain.

This seminar will share MASCAL planning resources and discuss micro simulations within MASCAL events designed to truly test and measure participant performance with high fidelity human patient simulators. Learners will be introduced to the SORT methodology for planning simulations, a rapid, simple process to develop simulation pedagogy quickly and effectively

Learning Objectives:

  1. Analyze MASCAL learning objectives at the macro and micro level and identify learning opportunities through medical simulation.
  2. Learn the SORT method to develop trauma simulations.
  3. Apply SORT within a larger MASCAL Scenario to create a micro-simulation against defined objectives.
