Small amounts of stress can enhance performance; however, excessive stress dramatically curtails execution. The presentation will present the neuroscience behind how and why this occurs with stress and also explore specific jobs where failure is not an option: such as airline pilots and Secret Service. How does the training for such positions differ from routine instruction? The presenter will draw on his own experience of developing simulation training for elite, rapid insertion units of the U.S. military and how these lessons can be applied to healthcare simulation training and assessment.
Allan Hamilton started his working life as janitor. He went on to become a Harvard-trained brain surgeon. He is a decorated Army veteran who served in Operation Desert Storm. He holds four professorships at the University of Arizona in Neurosurgery, Radiation Oncology, Psychology, and Electrical & Computer Engineering He has been selected by his peers as “One of America’s Best Doctors” for more than twenty-three consecutive years. Dr. Hamilton has authored five non-fiction works that have won numerous literary awards and have translated into several languages. He is a world renown horse whisperer and trainer.
Dr. Hamilton heads up a 35,000 square-foot facility to carry out simulation training for the Arizona Health Sciences Center. He has been selected as “One of the Leading Intellects of the Twenty-First Century” and been called “the prototype of the modern Renaissance man.” He has been recognized with the Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015. In 2019, he was awarded the highest academic accolade given by the state of Arizona and was bestowed the title of Regents Professor, given to less than 1% of all eligible faculty members in the state’s university system.
As an undergraduate, Allan studied creative writing under Rod Serling, the creator of The Twilight Zone. Dr. Hamilton has worked for over 17 years as the senior medical script consultant for the hit TV medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy. He is currently at work on his sixth book that will focus on the human brain.
