The term “Metaverse” is often applied to gaming; however, it will have real implications on training doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals. University of Cambridge and Cambridge University Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust are investing in extended reality, one of the staples of the Metaverse where patient holograms can be used for simulation training. In this webinar, Dr. Jonathan Martin of Cambridge University Health Partners will share how Cambridge is implementing this new technology into its educational programs while sharing best practices that you can use yourself in your simulation training. You will learn the relative value of holographic technology versus other traditional forms of simulation, as well as some of the unique characteristics of “Mediverse” training that analog capabilities cannot mimic. For example, you can have distributed simulations with participants in different physical locations seeing the same thing, at the same time enabling them to practice together when thousands of miles away from each other and in the comforts of their own home.
Dr Martin graduated from Cambridge University prior to completing his medical studies at Oxford University. Following this he undertook an internal medical rotation at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospital in London before completing anaesthesia training through the Imperial School of Anaesthesia. He completed his Intensive Care specialist training in large university hospitals in London, Australia and Canada. He has also worked in pre-hospital care and holds a Diploma in retrieval and transfer medicine. He is dual certified in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine and works as a Consultant at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. Dr Martin has over ten years experience in medical simulation and is the co-lead for simulation at Cambridge University Hospitals.
