Abstract:
Every Simulationist invests significant resources of time and finances to support clinical simulation experiences that possess the physical, environmental and psychological fidelity necessary to recreate the clinical environment. The 10,000-pound elephant in the room is the undeniable fact that the standard plastic manikins (high, mid, or low) are not humans, and despite the technical advances the corporations have invested to make them more lifelike, some simulated patient manikins will never be able to represent the complexity of human emotion from moment to moment or provide patient-centered input to improve health outcomes. In the US, the evidence-based impact of medical simulation has taken center stage as states are asking their health professions programs to significantly increase enrollment even though most disciplines are simultaneously reporting declining opportunities for clinical placement. In this CE webinar, we will discuss specific educational strategies that will maximize clinical educational and training work efforts, stretch our clinical learners to the edges of their ability, and create the essential physical, environmental, and psychological fidelity to recreate the clinical environment in-order to improve clinical outcomes.
Learning Objectives:
- Analyze essential elements of a an evidence-based training approach to integrating standardized/simulated patients.
- Explore all aspects of fidelity in healthcare simulation including physical, environmental, and psychological.
- Incorporate strategies to bring simulation to life and improve patient care outcomes, with standardized patients / simulated patients.
