Abstract:
In the not-too-distant future textbooks will become obsolete. Among other things they are one-dimensional with no interactivity and not conducive to group work. Not to mention how quickly they can become outdated. Then why are we having our students purchase costly textbooks? The Sentinel U ALIGN Community Health Content is a course development resource that allows you to forgo the textbook in place of engaging activities in our flagship Sentinel City and Sentinel Town. The resources include topic introductions, pre-and post-assessments, and summary recaps. The topics align with content areas and professional standards in most Community Health Nurse courses. Sentinel City and Sentinel Town are already used in hundreds of classrooms. Recent research supports the use of this type of experiential learning to achieve student learning outcomes. This approach is contemporary, and evidence-based, which supports learner engagement. This resource package comes at a time when nursing education is undergoing a dynamic change in response to the next generation of learners, global health trends, and technology. The content is outlined with the Sentinel U clinical learning resource teams recommendation for activities that meet the expected competencies.
Learning Objectives:
- Review Sentinel City as a comprehensive simulation for community and population health nursing.
- Discuss ALIGN as a course resource and review its features.
- Demonstration of use case for Virtual Patient training in the domain of community public health.
