Healthcare educators across a large variety of disciplines implement simulation as a primary learning methodology in preparing their learners for clinical practice. Although simulation has been research-proven as a highly effective experiential learning method, some scenarios and situations can compromise the psychological safety of the learner, negating the learning benefits of the experience. The concept of setting the stage for psychological safety has been emphasized in the International Nursing Association for Clinical and Simulation Learning (INACSL) Healthcare in Simulation Standards of Best Practice as a priority for simulation facilitators. While this is of high importance for facilitators, creating a psychologically safe learning environment in simulation goes beyond just the debrief setting. This presentation addresses the foundations of psychological safety and how educators can implement the concepts into the entire simulation experience from start to finish, not just in the debriefing environment.

LoraLynn is the Simulation, Skills, and Clinical Coordinator for the Utah State University Nursing Program in Logan, Utah. She has been a registered nurse since 2013 and has worked in a variety of areas from specialty surgery to emergency care and currently works in the NICU at her local hospital. She began as an educator in simulation in 2013 and earned her CHSE certification in 2019. She is passionate about seeking out innovative teaching methods, and particularly about implementing simulation in creative ways. She is also currently serving as the Vice President of the Utah Simulation Coalition.
