Abstract:

All health professions across the globe have been tasked to include interprofessional education (IPE) into their curriculum. In 2001 the Institute of Medicine issued the first call to action in the US. In 2010 the World Health Organization issued the alarm to a global audience. The creativity, adaptability, and repeatability of simulation-based education serves as a superior modality for IPE. Many institutions are discovering how the integration of Avkin wearables makes their IPE more impactful and transformative.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Analyze current trends in interprofessional clinical simulation education.
  2. Discuss at least 3 solutions to common barriers when integrating IPE learning.
  3. Identify at least 2 strategies for successfully developing medical simulation-based IPE programs.

Meet the Presenter(s):

Amy Cowperthwait CEO, RN, CNS, MSN, CHSE-A
CEO at Avkin

Beginning her career as an ER nurse, Amy Cowperthwait found her niche when transitioning to simulation at the University of Delaware. A trach simulation gone awry led Amy to develop a solution with a human element and ultimately become a disrupter to the long-standing, manikin-based pedagogy. She founded Avkin in 2015 after years of research and development. Since then, she has continued to be an innovator in the field of healthcare education. In addition to her work as CEO of Avkin, Amy is also busy presenting her keynote addresses at industry conventions and gatherings as well as co-hosting the Simulation Nation Podcast. Amy has co-authored several academic papers, modified The NLN Jeffries Simulation Theory by Pam Jeffries, and appeared as a guest on the Dr. Oz Show in October 2018.

Disclosures: Amy is employed by Avkin.
Julie Poore (DNP, MSN, BSN, RN, ANEF, and CHSE-A)
Director of Operations, Simulation Center at Fairbanks Hall at Indiana University Health

Julie graduated from Indiana University with her BSN in 1992. In May of 2014, she completed her DNP at the University of Southern Indiana with a focus on interprofessional simulation. Her involvement with simulation began in 2007 developing pediatric scenarios for the IU School of Nursing. In 2010, she worked with Laerdal Medical & the National League for Nursing to develop simulation scenarios for the Sim Junior manikin. Julie participated as a member of the advisory board in the development of pediatric V-sim for Wolters Kluwer and Laerdal Medical. In collaboration with a team of simulation educators, Julie developed and coordinated an annual one-week simulation course guided by the NLN/Jeffries Framework and the Standards of Best Practice. From 2014-2018, she trained over 100 simulation educators from five states & three countries. Julie is an Alum of the NLN Leadership Development Program for Simulation Educators (2015) and was inducted as an Academy of Nursing Education Fellow in 2021. In 2020, Julie achieved her CHSE-A certification. Central Indiana Simulation Consortium, Julie leads the Central Indiana Simulation Consortium & facilitates the quarterly meetings.
