Abstract:
The capabilities of the use of simulation as an assessment tool are profound. Assessing competencies of individuals, teams and systems are well within the value that simulation can bring to healthcare. Using simulation as a mechanism for assessment requires attention to controlling the reliability of the simulation as well as the assessment mechanisms. The design of scenarios can influence the ability to create accurate and reliable assessments. Careful attention to detail, as well as attention to the creation of assessable points during the scenario can facilitate the support of the end goal of assessment for the purposes of competence or the use in research.
Learning Objectives:
- Define reliability as it relates to simulation based performance assessment.
- List three advantages and challenges for the use of simulation for performance assessment.
- Discuss scenario design considerations to increase the reliability of assessments using simulation.
