Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been a hot topic since the introduction of ChatGPT in late 2022. This presentation will examine how to use the online program to create clinical simulation scenarios. The presenter will draw on their team’s experiences, including their recently published research outcomes, to describe the capabilities and limitations of this form of AI in medical simulation. The presentation will examine its uses including a live demonstration of the generative AI. Additionally, the presenter will review other uses for AI, such as ChatGPT, in clinical simulation. The presenter will also list the limitations of the AI technology with regards to the support of healthcare simulation curriculum, scenario, and learner experiences, including copyright issues, biases, and hallucinations (fictitious responses).
David Rodgers is the director of the Interprofessional Simulation Center on the Regional Academic Health Center campus of Indiana University, Bloomington. He is also a clinical assistant professor of medicine in the IU School of Medicine. Dr. Rodgers earned his doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction and a Master of Arts in Communication Studies from Marshall University. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from West Virginia University. Clinically, he is a national registered paramedic (NRP) with nearly 40 years’ experience including time as a flight paramedic, EMS supervisor, and manager of a hospital-based critical care transport service. With over 25 years in simulation-based education, Dr. Rodgers has a wide range of experience in simulation center operations and simulation educational program development. He is currently on the editorial board for Simulation in Healthcare, the leading simulation-based healthcare journal, and is an associate editor for Simulation and Gaming, the oldest simulation-based education journal. His contributions to simulation and the Society for Simulation in Healthcare were recently recognized with his induction in the SSH Fellows Academy.
