UbiSim Virtual Reality Develops Better Prepared Nurses With Realistic Experiences and Emotional Connections

UbiSim, a Labster company, is among the first nursing immersive virtual reality (VR) education platform. UbiSim VR enables nursing students to be better prepared practicing nurses through realistic experiences and emotional connections, where realism is incorporated into every scenario. UbiSimVR provide healthcare institutions with the ability to train nursing staff so your staff to improve patient outcomes. UbiSim VR training scenarios mirror patient disease states and give nurses the opportunity to practice skills: recognize and analyze patient cues, accurate decision-making, and practice communication with patients, patients’ families, and members of the healthcare team. This HealthySimulation.com article will explore how UbiSim helps educate and train nurses to provide high quality and safe nursing care.

Recent students reveal only about 9% of newly graduated nurses are ready to practice on day one, and even experienced nurses continue to have competency gaps. UbiSim VR simulation makes it easier, faster, and less expensive for healthcare systems to provide ongoing training for nurses at all levels to improve their practice and boost outcomes in a realistic setting.

An example is the learner will be immersed in a hospital room with an infant patient, interacts with the parent, and perform the psychomotor skills required to assess the infant. Once the skill is performed, the results will be displayed on the screen. This occurs in real time, requires the learner to respond to the patient’s and family member’s needs. Watch this video to see an example of UbiSim VR hear talk with the father, hear the infant cry, and assess their condition. The learner will assess and prioritze the findings to develop the nursing care plan. In this scenario, the learner should focus on the adventitious breath sounds, an elevated temperature, and respiratory difficulties.

According to a blog by Testa (2023), UbiSim’s innovative platforms offer a wide range of benefits that streamline learning, empower students, and foster the development of competent and confident healthcare professionals. UbiSim VR nursing education platform contributes to the nursing students’ and nurses’ clinical judgment with the NCSBN Clinical Judgment Measurement Model (NCJMM) as a framework for the valid measurement of clinical judgment and decision-making within the context of a standardized, high-stakes examination. UbiSim users put on headsets and step into an immersive scenario that enables them to practice their clinical judgment skills.

Interactive and Engaging Learning

UbiSim’s software-based learning incorporates multimedia elements such as videos, simulations, and interactive quizzes, that makes the learning process to stimulate and engage learners in an immersive way. UbiSim is a highly interactive virtual reality simulation. This interactive approach not only improves knowledge retention but also enhances critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential for nurses in real-world clinical scenarios.

Realistic Simulations and Virtual Patients

UbiSim’s nursing education software includes realistic simulations and virtual patient scenarios that allow students to practice their clinical skills in a safe and controlled environment. These simulations closely mimic real-life situations that enables students to develop essential competencies, such as patient assessment, diagnostic reasoning, and clinical judgment decision-making. UbiSim creates a safe environment for students to make mistakes and learn from the mistakes, nursing education software helps build confidence and competence to ultimately prepare nurses for the challenges they will face in clinical practice.

With the scenario example provided, reflect on your feelings when you heard the infant cry, the father ask for help, the lips turning blue, and the urgency felt. Now imagine providing this experience for your students and the benefit of this experience in a controlled environment. This is the advantage UbiSim offers your learners.

Poor Communication between clinicians and patients can lead to poor patient outcomes and readmissions that can result in a patient harm. The major impact of poor communication in healthcare is a reduction in quality of care provided, poor patient outcomes, wastage of resources, and higher healthcare costs. Communication failures also has a negative effect on patient and staff satisfaction.

In UbiSim, nurse learners can interact with a variety of patients in scenarios that ranges from medical-surgical to mental health to obstetrics and pediatrics. Through these scenarios, nurses work with the patients and their families to practice empathy and their communication skills.

“UbiSim’s really realistic and our patients, they look at you, and they’re very animated as well. I think you really feel like you’re engaging with a real patient. Then that communication aspect becomes natural. You can talk to them to find out what their needs and concerns are. Because they’re looking at you and moving. We have a baby in one of our scenarios and the baby will cry. People will feel that emotional connection because they want to help the baby.” Alyse Webb, UX Designer, UbiSim

Customizable Scenarios

Customizable scenarios in nursing software enable educators to create tailored learning experiences for students, and cater to specific learning objectives and clinical skills. These scenarios simulate diverse clinical situations which allows students to practice and apply their knowledge and skills in a controlled environment. The parameters of the scenarios can be adjusted through the Editor to allow educators to replicate different patient presentations, disease progressions, or even rare clinical events- such as a heart attack or preeclampsia – to provide a comprehensive learning experience.

The Editor is designed to be easy to use, with no need for programming and coding skills. Editor allows nurse educators to edit and revise the scenarios to reflect content taught to help meet the learning objectives. UbiSim offers scenarios and scenario ideas created by other educators in their community.

Access to NCLEX Related Information & Resources

In the rapidly evolving field of healthcare, it is crucial for nurses to stay updated with the latest information, guidelines, and best practices. Nursing education software provides a platform for easy access to current and evidence-based resources. The nursing education software allows students to stay up-to-date on the latest evidence that promotes continuous learning and ensures that future nurses are equipped with the most current knowledge and skills.

Nursing education software offers numerous benefits that streamline the learning experience for future nurses. As technology continues to advance, nursing education software will undoubtedly play an increasingly vital role in shaping the nursing workforce to to ensure that nurses are well-prepared to meet the evolving challenges of healthcare and deliver high-quality patient care. UbiSim VR enables students to be better prepared nurses.

“What excites me about the future of simulation and teaching is that we continue to be creative to teach and educate. The mix of hands-on practice plus this virtual reality environment will really complement each other and be able to prepare competent and caring nurses to be able to meet our workforce demands.” Amy Lee, Minot University, Nursing Department Chair.

“I love the tiny details. You can get the alcohol pad and scrub the hub, the sort of things that make it realistic. You can actually stick the patient, and the tubes fill up.” Lauren Ratcliff, Simulation Coordinator, Lamar State College.
