The Symphony of Trauma Simulation: TacMed’s Collaborative Approach

The Symphony of Trauma Simulation: TacMed’s Collaborative Approach

Halford Luccock, a renowned Methodist minister and Yale Divinity School professor, once said, “No one can whistle a symphony. It takes a whole orchestra to play it.” This quote perfectly encapsulates modern healthcare simulation. Just as orchestra conductors coordinate many different instruments, simulation educators and operators blend technologies to achieve learning objectives. For many years, manikins were the only instrument available. Today, new technologies such as partial task trainers, virtual reality, and data capture systems enable simulation centers to create more realistic and effective learning experiences. This HealthySimulation.com article by Dr. Dan Irizarry will discuss how Tactical Medical Solutions (TacMed Solutions), in partnership with other companies, is supporting and developing new instruments for the medical simulation orchestra.

Tactical Medical Solutions: A Leader in Simulation Technology

TacMed has been at the forefront of manikin based simulation. Their newest high-fidelity female manikin, MATTi, uses revolutionary modular design with replaceable limbs and advanced physiology data-capture to create unprecedented flexibility to support trauma and non-trauma scenarios with the same realism and durability TacMed manikins are known for. But TacMed recognizes that even the best manikin can be enhanced with other technologies. That is why TacMed has partnered with other companies to take simulation to the next level. These collaborations include:

  • MicroHealth: TacMed and MicroHealth have partnered to integrate TacMed simulators, a staple in Department of Defense medical simulation training centers, into their software solution, MTC2, the U.S. Army’s medical simulation training center simulation command and control system. MTC2 allows simulation operators to manage all the medical simulation center’s visual, sound, scent, and manikin technologies to create one cohesive simulation experience from one instructor control panel. With MATTI incorporated into MTC2, sim centers can deliver different medical and trauma scenarios while reducing gender bias. These updates will be backward compatible to current TacMed simulation systems. The end result will be a better learner and simulation operator experience, and increased compatibility with all industry simulation control software.

Vcom3D: TacMed has partnered with Vcom3D, an Orlando, Florida-based immersive and blended reality training leader, to encourage adoption of open architecture industry standards. Vcom3D is spearheading the implementation of the Modular Healthcare Simulation and Education System (MoHSES) standard. MoHSES provides an open-source architecture that, if universally adopted by industry, could make all simulators and simulation support systems easily plug-and-play compatible, to reduce redundancy and stove piping in today’s medical simulation products while increasing a simulation operator or educator’s options in simulation design. TacMed and Vcom3D are also working together to improve Arctic medicine training under the ECSTREME (Extreme Cold Simulation Training Environment for Medic Education) government contract. ECSTREME will add new virtual and manikin based technologies to simulate hypothermia and cold weather injuries to the Department of Defense’s simulation tools.

  • SIMETRI, Inc.: TacMed is partnering with SIMETRI, Inc., a woman-and-minority owned small business that delivers state-of-the-art medical simulation products and services, to advance canine simulator performance for better trauma training. Canine and veterinary simulation has trailed human medical simulation development. SIMETRI is creating a canine physiology engine that will improve TacMed’s K9 Diesel simulator’s ability to support all training from first responder through veterinarian education. These improvements will lead to a new simulator controller that will standardize controllers across the simulation product line and allow for more realistic training scenarios with proper physiological responses.

The Power of Collaboration

Henry Ford is credited as saying, “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” Anyone who has run a medical simulation understands it is a collaborative effort. Like a symphony orchestra, healthcare simulation requires different instruments focused towards a common goal, which is better patient care. TacMed is always in search of partners who want to work together to advance the art and science of medical response. TacMed believes that by combining the strengths of technological diversity and collaborative brain power, together, we can create even more realistic and effective learning experiences that ultimately save more lives.
