The International Pediatric Simulation Society (IPSS) has the annual November virtual conference IPSSV on November 7th or 8th 2024 dependant on international time zones. The title for the virtual conference is “AI and Technology: Bridging the Gap Between Innovation and Practice in Pediatric Simulation”. This article by Erin Carn-Bennett, MSN, RN will explore speakers at IPSSV and why attendance should be highly anticipated.
Artificial intelligence is a hot topic in the international healthcare simulation community currently. There is a lot of promise for AI use in healthcare simulation for low resource environments due to low cost and ease of access. There are pockets of work in pediatric simulation circles which are underway and IPSSV aims to showcase some of this work and also to showcase current emergent collective groups and forums.
The conference will close out with a “Shark Tank” competition. In the shark tank attendees who have been pre selected post application will have the opportunity to present their AI or technology based innovation pitch to the IPSSV expert speakers and judges. The speakers and audience will judge the innovation pitch concepts and give feedback and select a winner which includes a free pass to IPSSV 2025.
Highlights of IPSSV 2024 include sessions on the use of AI to write clinical simulation scenarios, application of AI globally, practical AI integration, and budget-friendly AI and technology based solutions. IPSSV 2024 provides the ability to connect with global experts’ knowledge and practical applications of AI and technology to enhance pediatric care.

Meet the Speakers at IPSSV 2024
Dr. David Rodgers: David Rodgers is the director of the Interprofessional Simulation Center on the Regional Academic Health Center campus of Indiana University, Bloomington. He is also an assistant professor of clinical medicine in the IU School of Medicine. Clinically, David is a national registered paramedic (NRP) with over 35 years’ experience in flight paramedicine, management of a hospital-based critical care transport service and establishment of a pediatric simulation center. In recognition of his contributions to clinical simulation and the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, he was elected a Fellow of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (FSSH) in 2024. David is an active researcher and writer, serves as a reviewer for several journals and has published over 35 peer-reviewed manuscripts and abstracts on AI in pediatric simulation.
Dr. James Leung, Virtual Resus Room (VRR): Dr. James Leung is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Dr. Leung is an Assistant Dean of the Centre for Simulation Based Learning (CSBL) at McMaster University which provides executive leadership, clinical simulation-based education to trainees, and faculty development courses for healthcare simulation facilitators. Dr. Leung is the Director of Simulation for the Division of PEM. James is also an Associate Editor for Healthcare Simulation in the journal Simulation & Gaming. James is also a co-lead in the national expansion of the ImPACTS (Improving Pediatric Acute Care Through Simulation) collaborative network. James co-developed the FOAM-Ed Virtual Resus Room (VRR) platform and will deliver an update on VRR.
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center Digital Experience Team (CCHMC)
Dr. Matt Zachoff is an intensivist with fellowship education in critical care medicine at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Matt is also a researcher who draws on his degrees in biomedical engineering and medical education to investigate and research the use of novel technologies in physician education and patient care. He studies how virtual reality, augmented reality and artificial intelligence technologies can enhance physician education, improve performance assessment and optimize healthcare delivery.
Dr. Joe Real is a general pediatrician at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Joe completed a research fellowship focused on medical education and uses VR to help providers practice communication and receive feedback in a safe, immersive environment. Joe has led VR interventions related to vaccine hesitancy, asthma management, social determinants of health training and clinical skills assessment. Joe is the principal investigator (PI) on studies funded by a Cincinnati Children’s Procter Grant to assess the impact of VR curriculums.
Bradley Cruse is a lead application developer at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, where he focuses on development of mobile AR, and VR based medical simulation software. His background is a Master of Fine Arts and Technology from the University of Texas and a Postgraduate Certificate in Artificial Intelligence. His work includes contributions to innovative projects in VR clinical safety education programs for clinicians, VR physical therapy games and 360 degree video experiences that explore patients’ various socio economic environments.
Dr. Isabel Gross, Dr Maria Bajwa and Dr Amar Patel INSPIRE AI Working Group
Dr. Isabel Gross is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physician at Yale University School of Medicine. She is the founding chair of the Healthcare Distance Simulation Collaboration and is on the executive board of INSPIRE. Her pediatric simulation research focus is on distance simulation, international outreach and explorations of technologies methods in clinical simulation.
Dr. Maria Bajwa spearheaded the development of distance simulation educator guidelines, integration of distance and virtual simulation environments. Her research explores technology integration into healthcare simulation, educator competencies, human factors, diversity, equity, and inclusion in these environments. She extended her work to promote healthcare simulation in Pakistan and the US, delivering keynote speeches and workshops nationally and internationally. Currently, she is researching the role of AI in healthcare education and clinical simulation.
Dr. Amar Patel has focused his career on advancement of healthcare education through AI and technology integration. Amar is a leader in healthcare simulation and e-learning, with a strong emphasis on personalized educational experiences and artificial intelligence’s role in transforming healthcare education. As the former Chief Learning Officer at CAE Healthcare, Dr. Patel oversaw global initiatives. His areas of expertise include curriculum development, project management, and building advanced educational environments that incorporate cutting-edge technology. In addition to his role at Power of One Consulting, Dr. Patel co-founded the AI Healthcare Simulation Collaborative.
