The Lou Oberendorf Lecture on Innovation and Healthcare Simulation: Crystal Washington
Futurist, author, and Hall of Fame Speaker Crystal Washington equips organizations with the
knowledge they need to become “future-proof.” As a technology strategist and certified futurist, Crystal makes complex artificial intelligence, social media, and app technology easy to understand and accessible for everyday people. As one of Forbes’ 50 Leading Female Futurists, she appears weekly on season two of the Emmy-nominated show Life 2.0.
Key takeaways from Crystal Washington:
- The business cycle used to be 75 years. In 2002 the time decreased to 15 years, now it is 3-7 years. This means businesses need to reinvent or refresh themselves at an unprecedented rate.
- At this rate, no one will ever be caught up.
- Our brains pick up minor changes and big changes as danger.
- To future-proof yourself: own your future and take action. Do not wait for your future to fall into your lap. No one is coming to rescue you -put on your own superhero cape.
- No one can know everything about a domain.
- Adopt a culture of curiosity.
SSH Fellows Main Stage Presentation: Screening “The Pitch”
The Pitch Documentary: Patient Safety’s Next Generation (2024) is the follow-up documentary to To Err Is Human: A Patient Safety Documentary (2019) by Mike Eisenberg. Curiosity led Mike to this latest film project, a documentary that focuses on avoidable medical mistakes. Medical mistakes are estimated to be responsible for 444,000 deaths each year in the U.S., the third leading cause of death. To Err is Human was the culmination of 3+ years of research and interviews by Tall Tale Productions. Together, they conducted over 40 hours of on-camera interviews with experts from across the healthcare spectrum to gain a clear view of the current state of patient safety in medicine in the United States. This documentary is available on Apple TV and Prime.
Following the screening, there was a Q & A session with the film Director, Mike Eisenberg. K.T. Waxman moderated the session with Mike, Connie Lopez, Paul Phrampus, and Wendy Le Grange. The panelists represented patient safety and quality, leadership, and industry. Each panelist shared their thoughts and ideas on how to make a difference in healthcare outcomes and patient safety with technology and the human touch.

- University of Miami Gordon Center for Simulation and Innovation in Medical Simulation: Harvey Premier
- Biomed Simulation: Revolutionising Surgical Training: Introducing Interactive Beating Heart Platform
Healthcare Simulation Dictionary
The Healthcare Simulation Dictionary 3.0 was printed by AHRQ and available for attendees at IMSH 2025. Dr. Ellen Deutsch from AHRQ was added to the associate editors. The editors and associate editors provided an overview of the changes and updates to the dictionary. They reviewed the process for how to get a word into the dictionary and the forms on SSH to complete. There were 170 new or revised definitions and over 44 additional simulation-specific terms. The acronym list was expanded. Download a copy of the Healthcare Simulation Dictionary.
SimVentor Showcase Demonstrations
IMSH 2025 provided an opportunity for 58 SimVentors to present their solutions to clinical simulation issues. These healthcare simulation pioneers delivered brief presentations of their products, followed by demonstrations illustrating how they address common simulation issues. Thanks to the SSH Fund, each category’s SimVentors winner receives a monetary prize of $1,250. The top overall award is given to the entry with the highest scores across all categories: impact, innovation, and approach. The best impact award recognizes the candidate with the most significant influence on the IMSH community. The best innovation award celebrates the highest creativity demonstrated among all entrants, and the best approach is given to the candidate showing the most merit. Additionally, there is a people’s choice award. This event showcased how healthcare simulation professionals can drive innovation and shape the future of clinical simulation.
