About SkillStat & Six Second ECG Simulator:

We are critical care practitioners, educators – and even patients – across most every healthcare discipline. We share a unique vision for building and keeping basic critical skills – in ECG interpretation, emergency cardiovascular care of adults and pediatric emergency care. We know that these skills often tip the balance in favor of those having a cardiovascular emergency. Early recognition and rapid intervention tend to divert ominous outcomes. Our passion is in creating specialized learning tools that are accessible, affordable and immediately useful. We design from core principles rooted in clinical experience and the science of best practice.

Six Second ECG Interpretation – true, robust interpretation that integrates ECG rhythm identification with meaningful connections to a patient’s health status – is our first major product line. Our 4 step approach to ECG interpretation is a proven approach to single-lead ECG rhythm identification that quickly addresses rhythm identification without ignoring the need for cardiac monitoring – the clinical significance of each rhythm to each patient.

The Six Second ECG system has been taught for more than 20 years. Instructors of this program include educators throughout North America and into Europe. The Six Second ECG Simulator has been downloaded more than 15 million times. The Six Second ECG book, ebook and book chapters are used by hundreds of health care professionals every day. The instructor kits reside with major health systems, university libraries and with medical training companies. The Six Second ECG system’s main strengths include:

  • Systematic, make-sense approach that is readily remembered and quickly used
  • Comprehensive set of tools for practitioners and educators
  • Clinical focus

Available for purchase are their workbook and instructor course. Learn more at the SkillState website!

An ECG simulator game is an applied game where healthcare simulation learners are able to experience identifying one of the 27 most common cardiac rhythms. The goal of this type of serious game is for learners to practice their abilities, therefore enhancing their capabilities under real-world circumstances and increasing patient safety. By combining elements of entertainment with clinical simulation, learners are able to master EKG interpretation skills in an environment that is engaging and risk-free. These types of experiences allow learners to make their own decisions and begin to understand factors that contribute to cardiac rhythms.

SkillStat Six Second Simulator Game

SkillStat’s Six Second ECG Simulator is a free serious game that generates 27 of the most common cardiac rhythms (lead II) for you to explore and identify. Simply click on any rhythm name to display the rhythm and its description. Hovering the cursor over the rhythm freezes the rhythm. At any time, choose Play to quickly test your ECG identification skills.

Learners are able to identify the rhythm displayed by selecting a name below the rhythm. If correct, the timer will stop. Then, the learner will select ‘Next Rhythm’ to randomly select another ECG rhythm and trigger the clock to continue. This approach to ECG interpretation is a proven approach to single-lead ECG rhythm identification that quickly addresses rhythm identification without ignoring the need for cardiac monitoring, by understanding the clinical significance of each rhythm to each patient. At any time, the learner can select ‘Reset’ to end the game. Alternatively, choosing ‘Prep’ will close the game and open “Prep” mode.

The Six Second ECG Simulator has been used to help learners for more than 20 years. Instructors of the SkillStat program include educators throughout North America and Europe. The Six Second ECG Simulator has been downloaded more than 15 million times, and the Six Second ECG book, e-book and book chapters are used by hundreds of healthcare professionals every day. The instructor kits are owned by major health systems, university libraries and with medical training companies. The Six Second ECG system’s main strengths include:

  1. Systematic, sensible approach that is readily remembered and quickly usable
  2. Comprehensive set of tools for practitioners and educators
  3. Clinical focus

PurposeGames EKG Games: PurposeGames is a website that incorporates learning and entertainment at the same time. All EKG games and quizzes on this website are created by the website’s 800,000+ members from all over the world. Examples of PurposeGames’ EKG games include “ECG or EKG in detail,” “The Cardiac Cycle,” “Atrial Rhythms,” “Labeling an EKG,” “EKG Rhythm Identification,” “Parts of an EKG Waveform” and more.

ECG Stampede ECG Interpretation Game: ECG Stampede is a novel educational program designed to standardize emergency medicine resident training in electrocardiograms. The game’s introduction includes the following scenario: “Welcome to the wild West. You’re attending at a busy county hospital, and beds are scarce. Today is particularly bad, with hordes of patients checking in every minute. You can’t see them, but you need a way to triage them, so your tech brings you stacks of ECGs from the waiting room.”

To participate, learners can download the ECG Stampede application or choose to play online. Then, they must review the 10 ECGs presented to them and assess their acuity. Of the ECGs presented, they can label:

    • 1 as a code STEMI
    • 2 to room immediately to be seen
    • 2 to the next available bed
    • 5 to stay in the waiting room

Practical Clinical Skills EKG Interpretation Practice Drill: Practical Clinical Skills, a clinical simulation learning website, offers an EKG Interpretation Practice Drill. The website’s first ECG simulator replicates paper ECG tracing with multiple-choice questions and answers. Answers are immediately reviewed, and interpretation advice is provided along with the correct answer.

During an ECG simulation quiz, users are given 20 tracings to analyze without immediate feedback. At the end of the quiz, each tracing is scored, and the user score is compared to mean and top scores for all recent website visitors. A fully graded answer sheet is available, and a large ECG tracing repository allows this quiz to be repeated multiple times. Additionally, a ECG Patient Monitor is intended to replicate a patient monitor. Learners are asked to evaluate 20 live tracings. Complete scoring and an answer sheet become available after the simulated quiz is completed.

Practical Clinical Skills allows learners to practice and receive feedback without clinical or exam pressures. Since 1999, the team has worked to help enhance clinical skills by making medical simulation training faster and easier. The website is designed to complement classroom training and clinical experience, helping to improve learner skills and professional confidence.

Ecg-quiz.com EKG Interpretation Games: The website Ecg-quiz.com developed an educational module to improve the quality and rapidity of ECG interpretation by physicians, nurses, paramedics, medical and nursing learners, and others. The goal is for adequate EKG interpretation to allow for an increase in prompt patient referral to acute PCI, pacemaker implantation or cardiac surgery, when indicated. The website encourages learners to partake in daily EKG interpretation practice by engaging in over 200 12-lead EKG strips and their associated clinical histories, as described in Ecg-quiz.com quiz games.

Examples of Ecg-quiz.com quizzes include an ECG quiz of the month, a mini-test quiz, five random questions, EKG practice test and four interpretation serious game scenarios. Of the scenarios for interpretation, patient symptoms may include intense chest pain; clammy skin; pain in the left side of the chest on inspiration; biting; oppressive, burning chest discomfort; shortness of breath and others.
