Ideal for learners across educational institutions and healthcare providers, the solution blends traditional instruction with augmented reality to create a fully immersive simulation experience. By fusing visual, virtual, wearable, biometric, and haptic feedback devices medical simulation training can now be measured in three dimensions. This next-generation intelligent solution from EMS quantifies not only actions taken by the participant, but also merges biometry and haptic feedback elements. According to Lynn Welch, the Vice President of Business Development and Marketing at Education Management Solutions, the totality of training is evolving through virtual reality. This has helped enhance the individual learner experience.

“What we’ve done is bring in the biometry of the learner, in addition to the data being generated off task trainers, and wearable devices. The scenarios we’re showing in the morning every day [IMSH 2023] will be combat medic scenarios,” Welch said. “We’re integrating manikin data. People have seen that before, but we’re doing it from multiple manufacturers simultaneously, and merging that with audio and the video.”

She added that motion capture and the biometry, along with the full haptic feedback from the actual participant, help make this experience so impactful. In the demonstration below, the combat medic wears a Teslasuit, which is a full-body haptic feedback and motion capture device.

“[This captures the manikin’s] respiration and his heart rate,” Welch explained. “As you are evaluating the quality of your simulations, [consider] the level of intensity that you think you’re creating, and the realism. How’s that mapping to the real world? [Our solution provides] real, internal reactions as well as the external action.”

EMS will be showcasing this immersive reality learning solution in a healthcare setting environment in the afternoons at IMSH 2023. Welch said the solution is very applicable to nursing and medicine academic programs. Event attendees will see a live actor with a wearable device suit that also is generating data through SonoSim. EMS will be pulling the SonoSim data in as well.

“The vest is allowing that emergency response doctor who’s in the ER to actually do a live ultrasound on a serious cardiac issue. They can then decide what action to take with a wearable vest that allows them to do an actual procedure with a live actor,” Welch explained. “[SonoSim] will be capturing all of that data which will then flow into our system, along with all the audio and the video, and again, the learner’s biometry [from] wearing the Teslasuit.”

At IMSH 2023, EMS will have the company’s Teslasuits available for event attendees to try on and experience. The company will also be doing virtual reality and mixed reality demonstrations at the event four times a day.
