Empowering Nursing Students at Every Level: How UbiSim Enhances Learning and Confidence

Empowering Nursing Students at Every Level: How UbiSim Enhances Learning and Confidence

Each semester in nursing school presents unique challenges, from mastery of basic skills to the development of clinical judgment that prepares learners for the NCLEX. Through the identification of these learner levels and their specific needs, educators can tailor their approach to better prepare students for the realities of nursing. Are your nursing students getting what they need every semester? UbiSim, a leader in immersive virtual reality (VR) nursing simulation, is dedicated to transforming the way nursing students learn and develop these necessary fundamental skills. By offering highly realistic, interactive scenarios, UbiSim allows students to practice and refine their clinical abilities and communication in a safe and controlled environment.

Nursing students face unique challenges in their education to build foundational skills to mastery of clinical judgment. UbiSim’s immersive VR simulations are tailored to address each of these challenges in a safe, realistic environment for students to practice and grow.

UbiSim’s immersive simulations are designed to address these distinct challenges at every stage to ensure that nursing students not only gain the necessary skills but also build the confidence and competence needed to excel in their careers. Each stage of learners has their own challenges, and UbiSim has solutions for each of these stages.

First Semester Nursing Student’s Challenges & Solutions

  1. Anxiety or fear: High levels of anxiety as students face new and overwhelming tasks.
UbiSim helps to provide a safe, controlled environment for students to practice and repeat scenarios, reducing fear through familiarity.

  2. Lack of confidence: Students feel unsure of their abilities, especially when performing new skills. UbiSim offers realistic simulations that allow for repeated practice, building confidence as students become more proficient.

  3. Rigor of program and coursework: Students feel overwhelmed by the demanding nature of the program and the volume of coursework. UbiSim simulations are aligned with course objectives, providing practical applications that reinforce learning and make the coursework more manageable.

  4. Preparation for clinical sites: Students feel unprepared for real-world clinical settings. UbiSim prepares students through realistic clinical scenarios, helping them transition from the classroom to the clinical environment with greater ease.

Second and Third-Semester Nursing Student’s Challenges & Solutions

  1. Enhanced communication skills: Students must develop beyond basic communication to include empathy, therapeutic communication, and effective patient education for the best patient outcomes. UbiSim scenarios focus on advanced communication techniques to encourage students to practice empathy and patient-centered communication.

  2. Application of knowledge: Students need to transition from basic skills to the application of classroom knowledge in clinical practice, particularly in understanding disease processes. UbiSim provides scenarios that require students to connect theoretical knowledge with practical application reinforces how classroom learning translates to patient care.

  3. Linking assessment pieces: Students need to practice the Interpretation of complex data like lab values, EKGs, and imaging to make informed decisions. UbiSim offers simulations that integrate various assessment pieces, helping students practice analyzing and interpreting clinical data.

  4. Holistic patient care: Students need to understand and apply the holistic approach to nursing, including social, psychological, and emotional care. UbiSim simulations emphasize the holistic model, integrating social and psychological aspects into patient care, and preparing students for comprehensive nursing practice.

Final-Semester Nursing Student’s Challenges & Solutions

  1. Preparation for NCLEX or licensure exam: Students must balance their clinical practice with intensive preparation for the NCLEX or licensure exams. UbiSim simulations are aligned with NCLEX standards, allowing students to practice and apply their knowledge in a way that supports exam preparation.

  2. Development of clinical judgment: Students must gain a strong foundation in clinical judgment and prioritization which is crucial for patient care but is still developing in novice nurses. UbiSim provides complex scenarios that challenge students to practice clinical judgment and prioritization, simulating real-world decision-making.

  3. Autonomy and independence: Final-semester nursing students often experience anxiety as they build confidence in their ability to act independently and transition to the workforce. UbiSim offers scenarios that encourage autonomous decision-making to help students gain confidence in their skills before entering into the workforce.

  4. Function on an interprofessional team: Students are expected to be able to integrate into interprofessional teams upon transition to the workforce. However, students may struggle with communication and assertiveness, especially when dealing with busy or dismissive staff in the work environment. UbiSim scenarios simulate interactions with various healthcare professionals to improve the student’s ability to communicate effectively and assertively in an interprofessional team setting.

UbiSim Prepares Learners for the Next Generation NCLEX

All UbiSim scenarios build upon the NCSBN Clinical Judgment Measurement Model (NCJMM) as a framework for the valid measurement of clinical judgment and decision-making within the context of a standardized, high-stakes examination. The NCJMM has contextual layers from 0 to 4. During the scenario design process, UbiSim nurse educators align the needs assessment with Layer 3 of the NCJMM to ensure learners can perform all steps of the clinical judgment process, from recognizing cues to evaluating outcomes. Educators can easily use the diverse library of pre-made valid and reliable scenarios or the web-based Editor to customize or create VR scenarios focused on clinical judgment. UbiSim also provides a realistic context for learners to develop clinical judgment skills. Time constraints, risks, and consequences affect the decision-making process; these realistic elements are present throughout the scenarios.

By bridging the gap between theory and practice, UbiSim helps students build confidence, enhance their skills, and prepare for real-world nursing. The integration of UbiSim into nursing education equips future nurses with the tools they need to succeed in their careers and deliver high-quality patient care.
