EEDUSIM Delivers Healthcare Simulation Course to Europe and Beyond

The EEDU clinical simulation course covers emerging technology such as Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) to enable course relevance as technology advances now and in the future. EEDUSIM is the collaboration of healthcare simulation experts from various European countries. The EEDUSIM collaboration enhances course quality and promotes internationalization of the course and is supported by HealthySimulation.com’s media partner The Society for Simulation in Europe (SESAM).

The EEDUSIM project seeks to empower clinical simulation educators, bridge theory to practice gaps, and improve patient care outcomes in healthcare education. The course consists of healthcare simulation theory and practice modules, which lasts 80 hours. The EEDUSIM course is divided into eight units. The course is delivered in English but course materials are available in multiple languages.

Some parts of the EEDUSIM course will be recorded and then uploaded online, while other course segments are live streamed. The course modules cover clinical simulation modalities and other innovative teaching techniques. One module of the course focuses on the implementation of healthcare simulation into curriculum based on UNIPD’s experience. Practical weeks of the course at healthcare simulation centers offer some virtual scenarios that reflect on educators’ decision making processes.

EEDUSIM aims to develop cutting edge technology that will revolutionize healthcare simulation courses. The virtual campus functions as a central hub that encompasses theoretical content and healthcare simulation protocols. The dedicated project platform provides open access to all project related information which includes: the preparation, development, and delivery of course materials by listed partner institutions. The primary goal of this EEDUSIM platform is to ensure transparency for all and facilitate global access to highly regarded educational resources for trainers in Europe and beyond.

EEDUSIM has a cutting edge VR platform that revolutionizes healthcare education and clinical simulation by provision of a dynamic and immersive educational environment. The course transports students into realistic clinical scenarios that enhance critical thinking and problem solving skills. The platform allows active participation, offering instant feedback and assessments for rapid skill development. Accessibility and inclusivity is promoted, which enables students worldwide to access high quality education.

In the EEDUSIM course, there is a selection of different clinical simulation courses. A polytrauma clinical simulation is included where participants are presented with a realistic scenario where a patient has sustained multiple injuries across different body systems. This healthcare simulation aims to recreate the chaotic and high stress environment which is typically encountered in a trauma environment.

Other clinical simulation scenarios include a cardiorespiratory simulation. In this healthcare simulation participants are presented with realistic scenarios that involve cardiac or respiratory emergencies, such as a cardiac arrest. Immersive and new technology, such as hand tracking are used in the clinical simulation to create a more realistic experience for learners.

A mental health clinical simulation is also a part of the course and aims to recreate complex and nuanced dynamics of mental health conditions. This allows healthcare providers to practice and improve assessment, intervention, and communication skills for the mental health patient.

The VR platform is set to revolutionize the way we approach virtual reality education and healthcare simulation. New and innovative features take immersion and interactivity to the next level in clinical simulation scenarios. Here is a list some of the features that are developed exclusively for the EEDUSIM project:

  • The platform incorporates a two way voice recognition. This feature enables faculty to actively support and monitor learners throughout their entire learning process.
  • The VR platform incorporates advanced hand tracking technology for extended reality (XR) experiences. This means that learners can utilize their hands and gestures as natural input methods. The use of hand tracking means that there is an eliminated need for additional controllers or devices.
  • Real time feedback is another integral feature of our VR platform. Throughout the healthcare simulations, participants receive immediate and actionable feedback on their actions and decision-making.
