Pediatric emergency training and education are critical to the healthcare outcomes of an acutely ill child. To help prepare learners to care for pediatric patients, CAE Healthcare developed Aria, the company’s new high-fidelity pediatric simulator. A wireless and tetherless patient simulator, CAE Aria provides procedural knowledge and helps current and future healthcare professionals develop pediatric assessment and clinical skills through practice. Aria is designed to help learners refresh their reflexes and respond more quickly to respiratory distress in children, addressing an emerging trend within pediatric care: climbing rates of hospital readmissions involving respiratory illnesses.
Overall, Aria represents a 7-year-old child and can be used in a wide range of medical training scenarios. An interchangeable wig and genitalia provide gender flexibility when and as needed. The simulator’s advanced airway and lifelike neurological features enable training in emergency pediatric care. Featuring sternal rub and substernal retraction, Aria helps learners identify labored breathing and diagnose respiratory distress. The mannequin features a programmable chest, needle decompression and mechanical ventilation support.
Aria can also be used to perform neurological assessments to help learners identify abnormalities and deficiencies in patients. Aria can have seizures, respond to sternal rub and blink her eyes. The simulator’s pupils are reactive and can be tailored to portray certain conditions such as jaundice and hemorrhage. Other assessment abilities include gastrointestinal and genitourinary status, cardiac status and perfusion status. With Aria, learners can practice the delivery and management of medications and fluids and perform catheter insertions and enema administrations.
To further help healthcare professionals assess verbal and nonverbal cues, Aria presents more than 60 vocal expressions and sounds (i.e., confusion, anxiety, stress, pain). Other features that add realism to the clinical experience include bleeding modules, capillary refill, intravenous and intraosseous access for delivering medications and a simulated gastrointestinal system for inserting gastronomy tubes and administering suppositories.
To round out the educational experience, learners engaging with Aria have access to a library of ECG rhythms, CPR feedback, defibrillation, heart sounds and SpO2, or bowel sounds. With Aria’s 10 included essential pediatric Simulated Clinical Experiences, healthcare professionals can gain the proficiency needed to respond to emergencies and standard cases alike with confidence and competence.
Aria is wireless and tetherless for maximum healthcare training possibilities and easy transport the mannequin from the ambulance to the emergency room. Available in two skin tones (medium and dark), CAE Aria supports advanced training requirements for Pediatric Advanced Life Support; Pediatric Early Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization; and Advanced Pediatric Life Support certifications.
