So how realistic should simulation-based training be? According to Alinier (2011), the aim of running simulation sessions is for participants to acquire experience in a safe environment. The scenarios and the elements around them need to be realistic to help participants “suspend disbelief” so that their cognitive, clinical, and non-technical skills can be observed in a safe and controlled environment. A certain level of realism is required so the participant(s) can consider the situation and patient as real and initiate treatment as they would in an actual clinical setting.
