Laerdal’s SimCapture Healthcare Simulation Management System Consistently Delivers

Laerdal’s SimCapture allows simulation centers to effectively manage, record, and assess simulation training, both on-site and in-situ. Capture audio, video, annotations, patient monitors, and simulator data in a single web-based interface that enables medical schools, nursing schools, and hospitals to deliver high-quality training, education, and quality improvement programs. Laerdal acquired B-Line Medical and relaunched the audiovisual recording system SimCapture in 2019. Laerdal’s SimCapture offers a comprehensive cloud-based platform that enables simulation centers to manage, capture, and analyze simulation activities efficiently. SimCapture has some new features. This HealthySimulation.com article by Teresa Gore, PhD, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, CHSE-A, FSSH, FAAN, will discuss the latest features of SimCapture: mobile camera app, inventory management, and learning management system (LMS) integration.

What are the Benefits of SimCapture?

  • Standardize and automate your clinical exams: Stay in control as you prepare and manage Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCE) and high-stakes exams. SimCapture flexibly automates and digitalizes your clinical exam flow and evaluations in a customized way while providing central management of multiple bays, rooms, and floors in a single control interface. It also enables team training and student-driven encounters (ideal for low-stakes OSCE, formative assessment, or training).
  • Deliver consistent, high-quality simulation training: Give your learners the training opportunities and high-quality feedback they need while streamlining the management, recording, debriefing, and assessment of simulations.
  • Record and debrief any simulation. Debriefing is critical to simulation-based learning as it allows learners to reflect on their performance and improve future training outcomes. Pre-defined and free-text, customizable annotations enable instructors to prepare and focus on critical aspects of the simulation and what they want to assess. Moments in the recordings can be marked and annotated for review. Faculty can watch recordings from anywhere. Recordings are easily and securely shared with individual students on or off campus.
  • Get insights on learners’ performance. Meaningful data has the power to transform learning outcomes, provide valuable insights into trainees’ performance and progression over time, and help you identify those in need of remediation. This data plays a critical role in successfully implementing competency-based education, which focuses on mastering specific skills or knowledge areas at each learner’s pace.
  • Encourage peer-to-peer and individual practice. An educator’s time is precious and should be dedicated to meaningful student encounters. SimCapture allows students to repeatedly train and assess fundamental skills independently or with a peer, saving the educator’s time and resources. Instructors can track their progression and verify competency with robust data reporting. Students can use their mobile devices to record their skills practice and send to their instructor for assessment and evaluation.

What’s New with Laerdal SimCapture?

Laerdal’s SimCapture offers a system to streamline sim center management and boost Return on Investment (ROI). SimCapture decreases the traditional administrative workload, which frees up more time for collaboration with educators to provide better simulation experiences for learners. This is accomplished through the identification and determination of customizable assessment and evaluation metrics to capture what is occurring in the simulation lab and with the learners. This makes data management and demonstrating ROI achievable. Another benefit is the ability to evaluate and track competency-based outcomes for the learners. The dashboards are easy to read for individual learners and cohorts. This allows the simulation program to assist the educators with needs assessments and gap analysis to continue to grow and improve learner outcomes.

SimCapture has new features to improve simulation lab operations and learner outcomes. The features include a mobile camera app, inventory management, and learning management system integration.

  • Mobile Camera App to Facilitate In-Situ Simulations: The SimCapture Mobile Camera app allows the simulation lab to record the simulation experience without additional hardware while providing full access to SimCapture functionalities. The app is available on Android and iOS to capture cases outside the traditional simulation lab spaces, such as transport, in-situ, and on-site cases. The SimCapture Mobile Camera app allows up to four camera feeds to synchronize and record every angle in one or multiple locations for a holistic view simultaneously. The recording goes from live stream to the SimCapture cloud. An important aspect is the ability to annotate the video in the SimCapture interface during the simulation, which is available immediately and can be used during the debriefing session. This app is LLEAP compatible.
The mobile camera app helps the simulation lab staff offer flexible simulation scenario locations without the hassle of transporting bulky AV equipment. Pairing the phones or tablets and SimCapture is easy by simply entering a four-digit code. For clinical educators, the ease of use opens the possibilities for scenarios and tracks the students’ performance. For sim technologists, the SimCapture mobile camera app is easy to use, low maintenance, and opens the simulation locations to environments that were previously off-limits.
  • Inventory Management: Inventory management allows for tracking of consumable and capital usage in simulation sessions – scheduled or ad hoc. This will help users streamline their simulation center operations, optimize their resources, and plan and budget more accurately. Integration with scenarios and reservations eases planning, forecasting, and budgeting. Handy capital and consumable reports with automatically updated data are available.
  • Learning Management System (LMS) Integration: LMS integration allows essential course and student information to be automatically transferred and updated. SimCapture uses the Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) standard-based integration, which is compatible with Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, and other Learning Management Systems supporting LTI.
