Keynote Speakers

Dr. Jan Jones-Schenk, Opening Keynote – Competency-Based Education: “Things for the Journey: What Nurse Educators Know” : This timely and noteworthy presentation on competency-based education (CBE) will address some of the challenges in nursing education, the reason why reforms are needed, and why CBE can be a good solution. In addition, Dr. Jones-Schenk will discuss competency-based education principles and the NLN Vision Statement on Integrating Competency-Based Education in the Nursing Curriculum. She will close by focusing on what nurse educators believe and know about teaching and learning and how that knowledge can help on the journey to transforming nursing education using CBE.

Dr. Gerry Altmiller – National Faculty Meeting Transitioning to Competency-Based Education: Structure, Process, Outcomes : The faculty meeting creates an opportune time to explore pathways to transition to competency-based education. Following the Donabedian model of structure, process, outcomes, this presentation will demonstrate practical approaches nursing programs can consider in their transition to competency-based education. Strategic steps to create the infrastructure needed to scaffold competency-based education and assessment across the curriculum will be demonstrated to support faculty in making incremental yet productive advances.

Dr. Jared Kutzin – Debra L. Spunt Lecture: Time in Grade or Grade over Time? : How do we, as educators, know our students are ready to progress or graduate? Is it the time they spend in class? Do we rely on our own gestalt? A standardized test? Do our current assessment mechanisms fairly, accurately, and completely assess competence?

This presentation will draw upon experiences in aviation, health care, and other industries and challenge faculty to re-think their curriculums, assessments, and educational methodologies. We as educators need to ensure our learners are engaged, motivated, and meet a minimum standard.

The health and safety of our patients and our profession demands we consider new, bold approaches to education, including competency-based approaches. Attendees will leave with an understanding of competency-based education, being able to articulate the benefits and the challenges, and a roadmap to use on their own journeys.

Dr. Hege Langli Ersdal – Plenary Speaker: Simulations Save Lives! Major reduction in maternal and newborn deaths after implementation of Safer Births training : In-situ simulation training on “day-of-birth” emergencies, as part of the Safer Births Bundle of Care scale-up, has improved clinical care and reduced early maternal and newborn deaths by around 50% among over 300,000 deliveries in Tanzania. The scale-up has now increased to 152 hospitals with funding from the World Bank.

The Safer Births Bundle of Care is developed in collaboration with midwives, as an iterative process over 15 years, based on identified needs and scientific evidence. Local hospital facilitators are trained in simulation and QI methodologies to lead weekly simulations, addressing procedure-performance gaps guided by own clinical data. The program shows that it is possible to implement sustainable systems for effective simulations improving patient outcomes in busy resource-limited healthcare settings. The presentation will discuss lessons learned in the program and how these may relate to both high- and low-medium income settings.

The National League for Nursing (NLN) has been involved in nursing simulation and clinical simulation research for numerous years. HealthySimulation.com signed a media partnership to support the NLN in May of 2023. In 2003, through a grant from the Laerdal Medical Corporation, the National League for Nursing began a three-year, multisite study to explore how to design and implement simulations as a teaching strategy and evaluate selected learning outcomes using simulations. As a result of this research, the Jeffries Simulation Framework was developed. The NLN/Jeffries Simulation Theory evolved from the simulation framework in 2015. Dr. Gore has experience in educating future nurses in the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs. Dr. Gore has a PhD in Adult Education, a DNP as a family nurse practitioner, and a certificate in Simulation Education. Dr. Gore is an innovative, compassionate educator and an expert in the field of healthcare simulation. In 2007l Teresa started her journey in healthcare simulation. She is involved in INACSL and SSH. She is a Past-President of INACSL and is a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator Advanced (CHSE-A). In 2018, she was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN). In 2021, she was inducted as a Fellow in the Society of Simulation in Healthcare Academy (FSSH) and selected as a Visionary Leader University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing Alumni. During her career, Dr. Gore has led in the development and integration of simulation into all undergraduate clinical courses and started an OSCE program for APRN students. Her research interests and scholarly work focus on simulation, online course development and faculty development. She has numerous invited presentations nationally and internationally on simulation topics.
