Hospital simulations inspire student innovators

The trend to combine bio-engineering departments with or within an institution’s healthcare simulation program is contiuing to grow. All around the world, engineering departments are recognizing the growing opportunities for product development within healthcare through simulated innovations.

Today we share another such story out of Stanford from the School of Medicine website:

In order to invent new medical devices to address problems in health care, the doctors and engineers in Stanford Biodesign ’s year-long fellowship program spend up to six weeks immersed in the hospital or other health-care facilities, watching procedures and asking questions. For undergraduate and graduate students in Biodesign’s introductory classes, firsthand observation is much harder to accomplish because of time constraints and privacy issues.

To solve this problem, Lyn Denend , Biodesign’s director for academic programs, teamed up with emergency room doctor Alexei Wagner , MD, to develop a new approach for an introductory Biodesign Innovation class, which I describe in a recent Stanford News article . Drawing on the resources at the School of Medicine’s Center for Immersive and Simulation-Based Learning , Wagner developed three realistic scenarios around the class’s focus on health care needs related to aging. The scenarios included a chaotic, five-bed ER; a quiet palliative care room where an elderly woman lay dying; and a physical therapy consultation with an older fall victim and his wife.

The goal was to expose students to real problems in health care, an essential part of the Biodesign process for developing medical devices and other technology-based solutions. On the first night of the class, students were randomly assigned roles as patients, caregivers, or observers, and plunged into these scenarios. Each one featured real doctors and nurses, high-tech mannequin patients with voices controlled by simulation staff, standardized patients (actors trained to play specific roles) and, most importantly, real problems in care delivery. As each simulation played out, the students struggled to offer appropriate care and make critical medical decisions against a frustrating backdrop of financial limitations, overburdened providers and conflicting family wishes.

Students attending Envision’s summer 2017 National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF): Medicine will have the unique opportunity to get hands-on experience in an emergency medical simulation, When Care is Hours Away. This dynamic workshop gives high school students an immersive experience to gain invaluable, real-life medical skills that are critical success in a future career and beyond.

The simulation was created in collaboration with wilderness medicine expert Dr. Paul Auerbach and simulation expert Dr. Rebecca Smith-Coggins, professors in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine. NYLF Medicine students will learn first-hand how to care for a patient in an emergency using only the materials at hand, employing time-tested techniques that are used around the world.

“We’re proud to have some of the most well-regarded and prominent leaders, educators, and physicians in the medical community provide support to and directly participate in NYLF Medicine, speaking to student groups and designing exciting curriculum modules like this simulation,” says Andrew Potter, Chief Academic Officer at Envision. “Not all emergencies take place in hospitals, so it is crucial for students to have skills in spine precautions, tying a tourniquet, hypothermia prevention, and more.”

Held in nine U.S. cities, NYLF Medicine represents an opportunity for aspiring doctors and medical professionals to get hands-on experience and valuable insight from health care professionals that will help them succeed in their future medical studies and careers. Program attendees visit a state-of-the-art medical simulation center to train like professionals in a variety of medical procedures and technologies with guidance from experts.

Job Summary

The Simulation Technician facilitates the practice and experience of applying new medical techniques, using a wide variety of technologies and methodologies. This role will assist the Simulation Specialist in the implementing new services and features for existing systems.

Essential Functions

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Service Standards of the Hospital(s).

  • Assists with medical simulation training by preparing for session, setting up task trainers and operating patient simulators during medical simulation scenarios
  • Prepares, plans and creates realistic simulations. Works with other staff to maintain and manage all aspects of the Simulation Lab
  • Assists in continued integration of medical simulation methodologies in curriculum, including education training, skill development and assessment
  • Operates and maintain task trainers, mannequin-based simulators, virtual reality procedural trainers and associated supplies and equipment
  • Collaborates with vendors to troubleshoot equipment and system problems and to implement hardware and software updates
  • Participates in community outreach programs and other duties as assigned
  • Sets up, operation of, and pack down of skills, simulation, and associated education equipment
  • Assists in video production such as planning, filming, and editing

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Experience: Three (3) years of directly related work experience

License/Certification: None

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

These are the observable and measurable attributes and skills required to perform successfully the essential functions of the job and are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or licensure/certification.

  • Ability to coordinate multiple meetings and resources (people, equipment, locations)

  • Knowledge in operating high fidelity mannequin-based simulators, Audio Visual technologies, and other simulation related Information Technology systems.

  • Knowledge of hospital policies, procedures and safety and health requirements
  • Knowledge of  PC-based and Mac-based office, Audio Visual, and editing software, computers and operating systems and ability to troubleshoot the equipment
