POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine is currently seeking a Program Coordinator to join our team of professional.

Duties include:

  • Develops a recruitment, training and supervising plan for Standardized Patient Program participants.
  • Coordinates, manages, and supervises teaching and assessment activities involving medical students, interns, residents, physicians and other professions using Standardized Patients.
  • Provides training to standardized patients to include but not limited to feedback training, best practices for SP Education, current training techniques, and quality control procedures.
  • Assists in the orientation of students, residents and others to the activity and center.
  • Works with the Simulation Operations Manager and the Simulation Specialist in EMS (Education Management Solution) software to set up learner events.
  • Collaborates in case development and scenario design with the Medical Director for teaching and assessment activities involving standardized patients.
  • Assists with the promoting and implementation of Standardized Patient program services for the community.
  • Works with simulation administrator to create and design recruitment and marketing materials and website pages for distribution to potential applicants and program users.
  • Acts as a liaison to internal and external customers.
  • Maintains proficiency in existing and emerging trends in the use of Standardized Patients in medical education including basic theory, design and implementation, by maintaining a literature base, evaluating new methods and materials, and participating in education opportunities (travel to standardized patients educator conferences – ASPE).
  • Manages payroll for SPs and maintains budget for Standardized Patient Program. Reports to Medical Director at quarterly meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning tasks that are logically related.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of office or related experience.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two (2) years of experience with Standardized Patients in medical education, health and/or educator background preferred.
  • Familiarity with teaching and assessment methods and technologies involved in the use of Standardized Patients preferred.

Basic Qualifications

Required

  • Associates degree or technical certification in a computer technology field (e.g. hardware, networking, helpdesk, etc.), or 5+ years of professional clinical experience
  • 3+ years of experience in the civilian or military medical field
  • 3+ years of experience with the operation of human patient simulation equipment

Preferred

  • Paramedic equivalent medical knowledge
  • Military experience, particularly military medical experience
  • Understanding of caring for and transporting trauma patients
  • Working knowledge of the organizational functions and training requirements of Air Force Medical Treatment Facilities
  • Experience as any technical course instructor/teacher

Professional Skills

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, attention to detail, strong organizational skills, computer proficiency, and the ability to work under strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of course development and education methodology for working with adult learners in a military environment
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making capabilities

The NCEC is a joint effort between the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care (DON) at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) and the College of Nursing (CON). Primary responsibilities include planning, designing, implementing, and evaluating simulation-based learning across the continuum from standardized patients through high-fidelity simulators.   • Leads the integration of simulation/instructional technologies throughout the CON and DON curriculums.

This person will work closely with the Director of the Division of Education to provide leadership for a broad range of simulation and training programs of the Division of Education.  These programs will address the evolving needs of practicing surgeons, surgery residents, and members of surgical teams to enhance patient safety and ensure delivery of surgical care of the highest quality.

This person will also need to continually assess national mandates and address the needs of individual learners through innovative simulation-based education and training.

This person will also play a pivotal role in providing leadership for specific activities of the Consortium of ACS-accredited Education Institutes to advance the activities of the Consortium and to pursue innovative multi-institutional research opportunities.  In addition, s/he will be pivotal to strengthening collaborative relationships with other national organizations and the federal government, including the Department of Defense.

Spearhead and provide leadership to this simulation learning program to surgical members and assist others to do the same. Involves the development of training on how to use Simulations for Surgical Training. However, this is a high-level position that manages the process rather than doing the technical training itself.

Primary Responsibilities: 

This person will provide leadership for the simulation-based surgical education and training programs and products of the division; lend expertise in developing, implementing, and evaluating innovative simulation-based surgical models; play a pivotal role in advancing the science and practice of simulation-based surgical education and training.

Expertise in writing competitive grants, implementing research projects, collating and analyzing data, and preparing manuscripts necessary.

Expertise in pursuing scholarly work to advance the field of simulation-based surgical education and training necessary.
