Title: Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygen Simulation in Pediatrics: Establishing the Current State & Defining the Path Ahead

Webinar Description & Learning Objectives:
This webinar will include a summary of the current state of ECMO simulation, based upon results of survey data from both IPSS and ELSO.  We will describe current gaps noted in our needs assessment, including standardized training materials, technical options for integrating the manikin with the ECMO circuit, and information on best educational practices for simulation and debriefing.  We will then describe future plans for the development of these materials, including collaboration with ELSO.
  1. Discuss the current prevalence and characteristics of ECMO simulation being performed amongst the community of pediatric simulationists and ECMO providers.
  2. Contrast various methods of interfacing a simulation manikin with an ECMO circuit, using high- and low-fidelity techniques, and the benefits and deficiencies of each.
  3. Describe current plans to develop standardized training materials for ECMO simulation through an interprofessional, international collaboration of simulation and ECMO providers.
Presenters:  

Lindsay C. Johnston, MD, MEd is currently an attending neonatologist at Yale University, after having completed Pediatrics residency at the University of Pittsburgh and fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.  She has directed Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital’s interprofessional ECMO simulation program for the pediatric ECMO team since 2010.  She has published several articles and presented information about this program at numerous international meetings.  Lindsay has been leading efforts through the IPSS, in collaboration with ELSO, to provide instructional materials and tools for the pediatric simulation community.  A recent graduate of the University of Cincinnati with a Masters Degree in Medical Education, Lindsay is interested in assessment of competency, and would like to apply this to assess the efficacy of ECMO simulation training in the future.

Anne Ades, MD, MEd is an attending neonatologist and the Director of Neonatal Education at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She is an Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She recently received her Masters Degree in Medical Education through the University of Pennsylvania. She is the director of ECMO education at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She has developed many simulation based ECMO educational programs and has been involved in several workshops and expert panels about ECMO and simulation. She is very interested in how to enrich educational programs with simulation and other techniques to enhance acquisition of knowledge and skill as well as to prevent skill decay.
Gary Oldenburg, MS, RRT-NPS is the ECMO and Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) Program Manager at Children’s National Health System in Washington, DC. He has developed and directed many ECMO simulation-based programs throughout his career as a leader in the ECMO community, including facilitating and directing the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) ECMO training courses in the United States and in Latin America. He is a member of the ELSO Steering Committee where he represents ECMO Coordinators and is on the Education sub-committee providing expertise in ECMO education and simulation. Gary is interested in encouraging, developing, and supporting ECMO programs with simulation-based training and competency.
