Decision Simulation Provides Online Training to Medical Personnel

Government Health IT shared an article by Dr. James B. McGee on Improving military patient outcomes through web-based clinical simulation, which highlights the opportunity for quick training that still increases efficiency and effectiveness.  The article explains:

“In many situations, clinicians must make diagnostic and treatment decisions in a matter of seconds as patients are triaged and moved into treatment. Making these critical decisions is a cognitive skill that is developed best with repetition and feedback. In essence, a clinical simulation platform is a cognitive task trainer that offers a safe environment for providers to engage in deliberate practice to improve and refine their decision-making skills—with no risk to actual patients.

Educators can build their own scenarios to mirror the patients, medical conditions and situations in which healthcare providers will be making decisions. These scenarios may be very different than what the providers experience in their current medical practices or in their military training facilities. Educators can also assess performance in terms of military medical competence, prior to deployment, during deployment or prior to re-entry. Gaps can be quickly identified and addressed.”

James B. McGee, MD, is the creator of a web-based clinical simulation platform at the University of Pittsburgh, and is the scientific advisory board chairman and co-founder of Decision Simulation, LLC.
